Is The Fast 800 right for me?

This is a difficult question to answer as every individual and everyone participating in the Programme is different in so many ways (weights, sugars, exercise, medications, ages, etc).

The different approaches within The Fast 800 can help people who are:

  • Looking to lose a large amount of weight and improve metabolic health
  • Looking to gradually lose weight and keep it off long term
  • Looking for a long term maintenance approach for weight management

The personalised Programme  helps to make healthy lifestyle habits  easier and provides:

  • Online assessments to tailor the level of exercise, determine the right level of fasting and align the individual’s goals to their plan
  • Critical support through the Community  where members can support each other and ask questions of our Health Coaches
  • Recipes (more than 400 of them), meal plans and shopping lists
  • Guided exercise (for beginner to advanced levels) and meditations
  • Tools that track waist, weight, HbA1C, sleep and mood – to help you create accountable goals and measure your progress.

It is important to note that if you have certain medical conditions, are pregnant, breastfeeding or underweight, you should not do the diet.

Please see ‘Who should AVOID a low calorie diet or fasting’ below for further information.

When does Week 1 start / why is there Prepare time?

Please be aware that Week 1 starts the Monday following sign-up. The time in between sign-up and Week 1 is called the Prepare period, and is designed to give you time to have a look around the programme, start planning your shopping list and recipes, try a workout or two, and get used to how the programme runs and works.

Please ensure that you are signing up according to how much Prepare time you would like before Week 1 commences – for example, if you would like a full week of Prepare time, please sign-up on a Monday or Tuesday, and if you would like to start Week 1 right away, please sign up on a Saturday or Sunday.

If you are having difficulty signing up / registering, please get in touch regarding our contact us form.

Do I have to give up coffee, smoking or alcohol?

No, you don’t have to give up any of these whilst following the Programme although, obviously, we would certainly advise everyone to stop smoking as soon as possible, irrespective of their blood sugars.

Coffee and alcohol are still allowed on the programme although the calories in both of these drinks need to be included in the daily calorie limit (noting that alcohol is highly calorific).

A pint of beer or a large glass of wine contains 180 calories, so really best avoided or kept to a minimum.

The good news is that red wine is included in the Mediterranean-Style diet, so once you finish The Very Fast 800 and The New 5:2, and move onto ‘The Way of Life’ approach you will be able to introduce alcoholic drinks back into your lifestyle (we go over this in more detail on the Programme).

Black coffee and tea are fine although you will need to include any milks in your daily calorie count.

What’s included in the Programme?

Our Programme teaches you the health benefits of a moderately low-carb Mediterranean-style diet, so it becomes a way of eating for life. It is based on the latest science and takes an evidence-based approach to healthy living focusing on nutrition, movement, behavioural change and sustainable lifestyle.

It includes:

  • Education around science-based lifestyle best practice
  • Weekly, time-saving meal plans – vegetarian and non-vegetarian – with automated shopping lists
  • The Very Fast 800, The New 5:2 and The Way of Life approach plans, some with Keto options
  • Exercise plans, incorporating HIIT and resistance training, designed for beginner to advanced levels as well as a library for further stretching, yoga and pilates videos
  • Trackers to measure waist, weight, HbA1C, mood and sleep
  • 700+ easy and delicious, nutritionist-developed recipes
  • Mindfulness meditations
  • Core learning content, plus access to exclusive articles
  • Support tools for liaising with your usual treating doctor
  • Access to a lively Community so you can chat with your fellow members and/or ask our online health coaches for support

How do I cancel the Free Trial?

Please head to your Programme Dashboard, click on Settings on the left-hand menu, and scroll down to Account Status at the very bottom of the page.

Once here, simply click Cancel Membership.

Please note, you are not able to cancel your account via the Community.

Who should AVOID a low calorie diet or fasting?

The Fast 800 programme is not recommended for the following:

  1. People who are underweight and/or experiencing an eating disorder, or have a history or suspicion of an eating disorder.
  2. Children (under 18 years old).
  3. Type 1 diabetics.
  4. Pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers or anyone undergoing fertility treatment.
  5. People who have a significant psychiatric disorder or substance abuse.
  6. People who are under active investigation or treatment, or have a significant medical condition affecting ability to comply with diet.
  7. People who have had a recent cardiac event, myocardial infarction or cerebrovascular accident (<3 months previously) or other heart abnormalities.
  8. People who have had uncontrolled heart disease, uncontrolled hypertension, or kidney failure.
  9. People who are feeling unwell, have a fever, are frail or recovering from significant surgery (<6 months ago).
  10. People who are on insulin. This is to avoid a potentially dangerous drop in blood sugar (hypo).
  11. People who are on ‘flozin’ medication (known as SGLT2 inhibitors, taken to reduce blood sugars, such as Dapaglifozin of Canagliflozin). This is to avoid the rare complication and potentially dangerous condition called euglycaemic diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), where despite having normal or only mildly raised ketones the medication can mask a serious complication of diabetes requiring urgent attention.

Is The Fast 800 Keto right for me?

The Fast 800 Keto may be the right approach for you if you:

  • Have tried The Fast 800 previously and want to get back on track

  • Have already started your journey with the programme and want to try something new

  • Are experiencing a weight loss plateau, or

  • Are simply starting with The Fast 800 for the first time, and ready to make a big change.

Our goal of The Fast 800 is to teach everyone that, regardless of your preferences, you can utilise the most up to date science and research to incorporate the principles and benefits of the Mediterranean way of eating and intermittent fasting into your lifestyle. Regardless of where you are in your journey to better health and well-being, The Fast 800 has options available to help you achieve your goals and improve your overall health.

Should you be looking for more support, sign up to our personalised Programme, which will help you to work out which approach is right for you.

How does The Fast 800 Keto fit into the Programme?

The Fast 800 Keto is the most recent addition to our available meal plans, and is designed to offer people an even lower carbohydrate option, that provides a great kick start to their metabolism – perhaps after a festive splurge or time away from fasting.

In The Fast 800 Keto meal plans on our programme, the calories are around 800-1000/day. Within this, you consume at least 50-60g of protein, around 20-30g or less carbohydrates and the remainder is made up with healthy fats.

The Fast 800 Keto book by Dr Michael Mosley states keeping the carbs under 50g per day. On the online programme, our meal plans still align with this, but keeping our average a little lower as mentioned (20g) to allow for people making recipe swaps and so you can still add extra low-calorie non-starchy veg without having to worry about counting extra carbs or calories.

The Very Fast 800 and plans including fasting days are similar to this, however, you have slightly more carbohydrates at around 50g or less per day (still considered low-carb) and the rest is healthy fats.

Our Nutritionist has worked hard to produce a variety of meal plans:

  • The Very Fast 800

  • The Fast 800 Keto

  • Transitional 3:4

  • The New 5:2

  • The Way of Life

With two-meal-a-day and vegetarian plans available for most meal plans.

Can I still drink zero calorie diet sodas whilst following The Fast 800?

We don’t recommend consuming drinks or foods containing artificial sweeteners. Read more about sweeteners here.

What are the meals like? Are the recipes difficult?

The low-carbohydrate, Mediterranean-style meal plans in our Programme are balanced for variety, nutrition, calories, protein and taste – designed to keep you fuller for longer to make each phase easily achievable.

With our meal plans on the Fast 800 Programme, you can plan for, shop and prepare the week’s food with minimal fuss. Our recipes are designed to be low in effort and high in flavour, and can often be prepared in double quantities to be packed up for dinner or lunch on the go the next day.

Many past members comment on the simplicity and deliciousness of our recipes, which are rich in vegetables, protein, fibre and healthy fats. They are designed with your success in mind and have a variety of options that suit both the keen cook and the novice.

What results am I likely to experience by following The Fast 800 Programme?

Results will vary across individuals however, common benefits experienced by past members include:

  • Visceral fat loss
  • Rapid, sustainable weight loss
  • General health improvement – a sense of well-being and increased energy
  • Metabolic improvement – improving blood sugars, reversing and preventing type 2 diabetes, improving cholesterol profiles, reversing NAFLD, reducing coronary artery diseases, reducing the risk of dementia, reversing PCOS.
  • A reduction in cognitive decline.
  • A boost in mood and motivation – a great way to reduce anxiety and depression.
  • Reduced inflammation in the body – improving conditions such as arthritis, asthma and psoriasis.
  • Improved relationship with food
  • Reduced hunger
  • Improved sleep
  • Increased fitness

Most importantly, we like to think of the Programme as a plan for life.

Our aim is to put you back in control so that when you finish the Programme you can continue to make healthy, sustainable choices.

Our members often comment that the information provided in the Programme can easily be incorporated into everyday life.

Why 800 calories?

800 is the generally accepted number of calories used to achieve weight loss in scientific studies. Professor Roy Taylor, leading researcher into the reversal of type 2 diabetes, used 800 calories in his test group in the DiRECT Trial.

We have found that 800 calories is high enough to be manageable for most members, but low enough to trigger a range of desirable metabolic changes.

Can I do The Fast 800 Programme with two meals per day?

Yes, absolutely! We have recently developed two meal a day plans, alongside our three meal a day plans, for those looking to extend their fasting window. Our meal plans have been carefully developed to ensure you’re reaching the desired macronutrients, taking any time consuming calculations away from you!

How much weight will I lose on the Programme?

The DIAMOND Study performed by Oxford University and Dr Clare Bailey looked at the feasibility of using an 800 calorie, low-carb, med-style diet as a treatment for people with type 2 diabetes.

After 8 weeks the average weight loss was 9.5kg, sustained over the course of the trial.

Results also included a significant drop in blood sugars, blood pressure and the use of medication.

Can I restart the Programme after I start?

As the Programme is guided, you are unable to pause or restart the course.

You can switch back to previous weeks and you also receive a free four week trial of the monthly subscription service at the end of the Programme to allow you to catch up on any missed content.

Why a lower-carb Mediterranean-style diet?

Research shows that a moderately low-carbohydrate Mediterranean-Style diet has unique power not just to restore your body’s ability to reach its ideal weight and stay there, but also to cut your risk of serious disease.

As one of the most studied and healthiest diets in the world – it is at the heart of all we do.

All of the recipes included in the Programme are based around the Mediterranean-Style diet.

Can I follow The Fast 800 if I am doing heavy exercise?

Please note, 800 calories a day (The Very Fast 800) is too low for those who are doing intense or endurance exercise.

If you are doing intense/endurance exercise, you will require more energy than most. You may still be able to follow The Way of Life approach however, you may require extra nutrition to support your training plan.

We would advise seeing your usual health professional before making any lifestyle changes or starting a heavy exercise regime as they will be in the best position to provide personal advice.

Can I follow The Very Fast 800 approach for longer than 12 weeks?

The Very Fast 800 approach is intended to be used for no longer than 12 weeks or until a healthy BMI is achieved, whichever comes first.

After a period of 12 weeks (or the achievement of a BMI within the healthy range) you should transition to The New 5:2 or The Way of Life, by way of gradually increasing your non-fasting days by introducing intermittent fasting and non-fasting days each week.

We also recommend drinking plenty of water and taking a high-quality multivitamin.

What tests/measurements can I do to monitor results?

The easiest measurements are things like:

  • Physical measurements of your waist, chest, hips
  • Weight
  • Sleep quality

Some weighing machines will also give you an estimate of your body fat.

You could also take a measure of your resting pulse, as this is a good predictor of future health.

Also, ask your doctor to measure HbA1C (average glucose), cholesterol and your blood pressure.

Is The Fast 800 Programme suitable for vegans?

There are no dedicated vegan fasting meal plans available on The Fast 800 Programme.

If you are not fasting, it is possible to adapt The Way of Life approach to create a vegan plan however, it will require your effort to ensure your daily protein requirements are achieved.

I have food allergies/intolerances, can I still do the programme?

There have been many people with certain allergies successfully complete the Programme.

The meal plans are not able to exclude certain ingredients. Thus we cannot offer a menu tailored specifically for food aversions, intolerances or allergies, e.g. FODMAP, egg-free, nut-free, dairy-free.

However, you are able to switch out recipes containing offending foods for a more suitable option.

What approaches are available on the Programme?

There are three main approaches:

The Very Fast 800, which is 800 calories per day for up to 12 weeks – this approach is for those that are motivated and want to lose a lot of weight rapidly.

The New 5:2, which is based on five days of healthy eating and two fasting days, created for those who have less weight to lose but would like to experience the other health benefits of fasting and healthy eating.

The Way of Life, which is for those that are already at a healthy weight but would like to improve their overall health.

We also have some other approaches available:

The 3:4 Transition Plan

The Fast 800 Keto

Does the programme have a gluten-free plan for coeliacs?

The great majority of the recipes are gluten free and any recipes that do contain gluten can be easily modified to become gluten free.

Our Health Coach team will be able to help with any questions in relation to substitutions.

I have limited movement – can I still do the Fast 800 Programme?

We encourage the integration of exercise and activity alongside your lifestyle changes for rapid weight loss and healthy ageing.

If you are injured or have limited mobility it is possible to follow the Programme without completing the exercise component. We offer variations to certain exercises to ensure the plan is accessible for most people.

If you are unable to do the exercises the main focus would then be your dietary and mindfulness changes.

We recommend consulting with your usual healthcare professional before completing the exercises to reduce risk. We also recommend reading our medical disclaimer.

What exercises are on the Fast 800 Programme?

We offer three sessions of resistance (20-30 minutes) and two sessions of HIIT (10-15 minutes) workouts per week.

Based on the personalisation quiz you complete at the beginning of the programme, you are either placed on a beginner, intermediate or advanced level.

There is also a library of additional exercises – such as stretching and pilates – if you are looking for more!

Can I still have The Fast 800 shakes while following the Programme?

We always recommend real food first.

The Fast 800 shakes contain 22 of the key vitamins and minerals plus fibre and protein so are great for busy/stressful days when the convenience of a snack on the go is important.

We suggest no more than 7-10 shakes a week alongside a healthy moderately low-carb Med-style diet.

I don’t need to lose a lot of weight – can I still do the programme?

As a part of your orientation for The Fast 800 Programme, you complete our Personalisation Quiz to tailor the level of exercise, determine the right level of fasting and align the individual goals of each and every member to their plan.

If you do not have a lot of weight to lose you may be placed on The New 5:2 or The Way of Life.

As your goals and circumstances change, there is likely to be an approach suitable for you, whether you’re looking to lose a lot of weight for better health, or want to eat in a way that will support healthy aging and promote longevity.

Do you have an app? Can I access the programme on my device?

Yes! Our interactive and Programme to lose weight for better health is now just a tap away. It is accessible on your desktop, mobile, tablet and laptop. It is now more mobile-friendly than ever before with The Fast 800 App.

I have a medical condition. Can I still follow the Programme?

We encourage everyone following the Programme, particularly those with diabetes or other medical conditions, to share information about The Fast 800 diet and lifestyle with their health professionals.

To make this easier to do, you can use the healthcare professional handout as a useful tool to help you discuss whether The Fast 800 is right for you.

Why is fasting a part of the Fast 800 Programme?

Professor Valter Longo, director of the University of Southern California’s Longevity Institute, is one of the world’s leading experts on the science of human ageing. Valter believes very strongly in using the power of fasting to delay ageing and prevent the onset of chronic diseases like cancer, heart disease and diabetes.

Fasting is utilised in the programme in a range of ways.

  • The Very Fast 800 approach is a type of fasting, as you are limiting your calories for a period of time for rapid weight loss.
  • The New 5:2 approach is intermittent fasting where you have 800 calories on two days each week.
  • Time-restricted eating (TRE) is another type of fasting, where you eat within a certain window.

I don’t consume dairy. Can I still follow the Programme?

We encourage full fat dairy and use it in some of our recipes.

To make the plans dairy/lactose-free you will need to substitute the dairy component with your preferred plant based alternatives.

If I choose to cancel my programme, can I also delete my account?

Should you decide to cancel your programme account, and wish to delete your account and associated data, there are two ways you can do this:

  • If you signed up through the app, you have the option to delete your account at the bottom of the Settings page.
  • Web and app members can request that we delete their account, by completing the contact form in the FAQs section of the programme.

What if I have a question?

If you have any queries about our shakes:

UK customers – please email us on shakes@thefast800.com

Australia customers – please email us on shakesau@thefast800.com

How are they different from other shakes?

There are several ways we are different from other shakes.

  1. We have formulated our shakes to match The Fast 800 lifestyle – to be nutrient dense, lower in
carbs, and higher in fats and protein to keep you fuller for longer.
  2. Our shakes are high in fibre (which is key to great gut health)
  3. Our shakes are 100% natural – nothing artificial.

How many servings are in one pouch?

There are 10 servings per 500g pouch, based on the recommended of 50g per serving.

How should I prepare my shake?

For a small meal (200kcal) take 5 level scoops (50g) of our formulation and add it to 200-300ml of water (add more or less water depending on taste). Shake well and enjoy!

For a creamier texture, try adding unsweetened almond milk or your favourite milk.

We also have some other tips to help you reach your goals and get the best out of the shakes.

  1. If too sweet or too thick, try adding more liquid to the shakes – try 300ml or even 400ml to taste
  2. Try blending yoghurt with the shakes in place of milk
  3. Use instead of cereal for breakfast and see how much longer your energy remains throughout the day
  4. Blend in berries or a dash of cinnamon to add to the taste
  5. Add a splash of peppermint extract – for a minty edge to the shake

How often can I drink them?

We encourage real food first. We are aware that this is not always possible so we recommend 7-10 shakes a week alongside healthy Med-style meals. They are great for a quick and easy breakfast – better and more filling than sugary cereals or other snacks.

Are they suitable for vegetarians or vegans?

Our original shakes contain milk whey and our vegan shakes contain no animal products at all.

Do they contain added sugar?

There is no added sugar in any of our shakes. Our shakes do contain natural stevia [natural monk fruit] as we want them to taste good, however the amount we use is low. Instead our shakes are made up primarily of healthy fats and proteins with a focus on ground nuts and seeds. Our new Mushroom Soup does have a very tiny amount in the flavouring, but this does not affect the sugar levels, in fact our soup has even lower sugar than our shakes!

Are they lactose free?

Our vegan shakes are! However our original shakes contains milk whey.

How should I store the packet?

We recommend that you keep the pouch stored in a cool, dark cupboard. You do not need to keep it
in the fridge.

Sometimes the powder gets caught in the seal. Give the seal a bit of a flick to remove the powder.

I want to use all The Fast 800 products together. Is this okay?

Our shakes and multivitamins have been designed with different purposes in mind.  Both support your nutritional needs whilst following The Very Fast 800 or on a fasting day, however, we have designed them to suit different purposes (i.e. we haven’t designed them to be taken together).

Whilst we always recommend real food first, the Fast 800 shakes contain key vitamins and minerals plus fibre and protein so are great for busy, stressful days when you don’t have time to cook. We suggest no more than 7-10 shakes a week alongside a healthy low carb Med-style diet, which includes a wide variety of low calorie, non-starchy vegetables (such as leafy greens) which we encourage you to eat liberally.

The Fast 800 multivitamin has been designed to safeguard your nutritional requirements whilst following the Very Fast 800 with real food.

As with any vitamin or mineral supplement, we would recommend that you read the label, as if taken in conjunction with other products, they may contain the same ingredients.  We advise that you discuss with your Pharmacist which supplements are right for your personal needs, and to ensure the vitamins/shakes don’t interact with any other vitamins or medication that you may already be taking.

Is the Protein Powder the same as the Shakes?

No, the protein powder is different to our shakes and cannot be used to replace meals. It’s been specifically designed to boost daily protein intake and is made with minimal ingredients and calories (each serving is only 120 calories and packs an enormous 22g of protein). If you would prefer a more filling option, with an added vitamin and mineral mix, we recommend trying our Original Shakes and Vegan Shakes.

Is the Protein Powder vegan?

Yes, our protein powder is made from natural, vegan ingredients and free from nuts, gluten, dairy, soy and egg.

Will the Protein Powder induce ketosis and why is it ‘keto-friendly’?

No, the Protein Powder alone does not induce ketosis but it can be used alongside a keto diet to add extra protein to meet your requirements. Our protein powder is classed as keto-friendly as less than 10% of the total energy content comes from carbohydrates.

How can I use the Protein Powder?

Exactly like our Original and Vegan Shakes, pop the powder into your shaker with 250-300ml of water, dairy and non-dairy milk. Shake well and enjoy alongside a healthy meal, or use them in smoothies, mix into Greek yogurt or try one of our recipes.

What if I have a question about the vitamins and supplements?

Please email our team at vitamins@thefast800.com for assistance with any questions related to our vitamins

How many capsules/tablets are in the bottle?

UK Multivitamin: 90 tablets Aus Multivitamin: 30 tablets

Energy Supplement: 30 Capsules

Immunity + Bio-Cultures Supplement: 60 Capsules

Vegan Omega 3 Supplement: 60 Capsules

How are they different from other supplements?

Multivitamin:

The Fast 800 multivitamin has been designed to safeguard your nutritional requirements whilst following the Very Fast 800 with real food.

The vitamins included in the Multi-vitamin are based on a recent study conducted in Perth, WA, which found all participants were deficient in vitamin A, vitamin D, vitamin E, folic acid, potassium, zinc, calcium and magnesium.

The Fast 800 Multivitamin contains all of these essential nutrients, along with others that the Perth scientists didn’t test for, including selenium and iodine. People living in the UK have some of the highest rates of iodine deficiency in the world; iodine is vital for a healthy thyroid gland, which in turn helps control your metabolism. Iodine deficiency can lead to hypothyroidism (an underactive thyroid gland) which often leads to weight gain.

Please note, while we do recommend taking a high quality multivitamin when doing the programme, particularly on the 800 calorie plan, in order for extra nutritional support, particularly on fasting days, there is no necessity for this to be ours specifically – we wanted to simply provide this as an option.

Energy Supplement:

The Fast 800 Energy supplements are designed to support those following The Fast 800 way of eating, especially those following the Very Fast 800 approach. During fasting or times of stress, energy cycles can ebb and flow, which is why ensuring you have an adequate intake of B vitamins and iron is essential for reducing tiredness and fatigue.

Can I take this supplement long-term?

Multivitamin:

The Multivitamin is designed to safeguard your nutrition and to help support against common vitamin deficiencies. We have always recommended our members take a good-quality multivitamin for additional support during The Very Fast 800, however it is also safe to take year-round. We would recommend speaking with your doctor if you have any concerns, and keep in mind that the multivitamin is not designed to take the place of a healthy diet.

Energy Supplement:

This supplement is not intended for long term use, rather to supplement your energy levels when required, especially whilst fasting / during times of increased stress.

Immunity + Bio-Cultures Supplement:

The Immunity + Bio-cultures supplement can be taken year-round, as supporting gut health is vital no matter the season. However, it is especially useful during times when immunity is naturally lower, for example cold and flu season (when there is also less sun around!) so can also be taken seasonally if preferred.

Vegan Omega 3 Supplement:

The Omega 3 supplement is safe for long-term use, however we do recommend discussing any plans for long-term use with a doctor, pharmacist or nutritionist before using the product.
