What to drink on fasting days: tips from our health coaches
You know about the importance of staying hydrated, especially on 800-calorie fasting days, but we know that sometimes you want something a little more exciting than water.
Whether you’re learning how to keep hunger at bay, or looking for a new idea that won’t break your fast while you’re practising time restricted eating, soak up these ideas from our Health Coaches on what to drink on fasting days:
“I enjoy organic black chai tea. It’s my favourite!”
Charlotte
“I’m very lucky that my husband will make me a South African rooibos tea with vanilla to coax me out of bed in the morning. During the day alongside lots of water, I sip on black coffee with a touch of cream on non-fasting days, Earl Grey tea without milk and sometimes I’ll make a big refreshing glass of water with lots of ice and lemon.”
Mary-Anne (who practises TRE)
“I love having fresh lemon in my water. When it’s cold, I make a warm tea with fresh lemon and ginger slices in hot water.”

“I have always favoured water over any other drink, and I drink tea between meals. You can use lots of interesting things to flavour your water – fruit, cucumber, ginger, fresh herbs. Get creative!”
Natalie
“Don’t just stop at lemons – I love water with fresh lime, too! I also have black coffee (with a dash of milk) and I like to break my fast mid-morning with a smoothie.”

“Thankfully, I’ve never been a fan of flavoured or carbonated drinks. I enjoy coffee with almond milk outside of fasting hours, but admittedly, I’m quite boring and enjoy drinking loads of water!”
Pascal
If you’re worried about a dash of milk in your tea or coffee breaking your fast, it’s not detrimental. Technically, it will break your fast, however, Dr Mosley has said that if that dash of milk is otherwise keeping you on track for the rest of the day, it’s okay. Strictly speaking, black tea or coffee, herbal teas and water are the most suitable options that will not break your fast. Just steer clear of lattes if you’re practising TRE and as always on fasting days, include milky drinks in your calorie intake. We always recommend full fat milk.
